Cervical Smears

We offer cervical screening to check the health of your cervix and help prevent cervical cancer. We look for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). This is because it can cause abnormal changes that may lead to cervical cancer.

Finding and treating any changes early can prevent most cases of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer mostly affects women and people
who have a cervix under the age of 45, but abnormal changes can happen at any age.

Cervical screening saves thousands of lives each year in the UK.

Regular cervical screening is important. You’re still at risk of cervical cancer even if you:

  • have had the HPV vaccine
  • have only had 1 sexual partner
  • haven’t had penetrative sex
  • have had the same partner, or have not had sex, for a long time
  • are a lesbian or bisexual
  • are a trans man or a non-binary person with a cervix
  • have had a subtotal (partial) hysterectomy that did not remove your cervix.

If you’ve had a total hysterectomy, you do not have a womb or cervix. This means you do not need cervical screening.

We routinely invite women aged 25 to 64 every 5 years. Most cervical cancers develop between these ages.

Your GP surgery gives us your contact information. Please make sure they have the correct details, including your:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • address
  • mobile number
  • email address

Your invitation will give you information about booking cervical screening. You can book as soon as you’re invited.

Trans men and non-binary people with a cervix are also eligible for cervical screening. How you’re invited will depend on how your gender is recorded in your GP patient record:

  • If you’re listed as female, you’ll receive invitations automatically.
  • If not, you can ‘opt in’ to receive routine invitations. You can do this by contacting a cervical screening provider, such as your GP, a sexual health clinic or a transgender health clinic.

If you’re unsure, contact your GP. For more information, go to www.gov.uk/trans-non-binary-screening.

Health Checks

Keep Well is a health programme designed to help you keep as well as possible. Health checks may be offered to patients aged 40 – 74 to look for any warning signs of conditions such as heart disease or diabetes developing.

The free NHS Health Check is with a healthcare assistant at your GP practice. You don’t have to wait to be invited but you do have to be eligible. If you are between 40 and 74 contact your GP practice to find out.  The Surgery will invite patients by letter to book an appointment.

A NHS Health Check aims to help you lower your risk of developing these common but often preventable diseases such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia.

What’s involved

The check will take around 20 minutes

  • Your height, weight, sex, ethnicity and age will be recorded
  • Your blood pressure will be taken
  • A simple blood test will check your cholesterol level
  • Your body mass index (BMI) will be calculated. BMI is a measure of whether you’re a healthy weight for your height.
  • You will be asked some simple questions about your family history, whether or not you smoke and how much alcohol you drink.

PHARMACY FIRST

Pharmacists can offer advice on a range of illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections and aches and pains.

They can also give advice about medicines. This includes how to use your medicine, worries about side effects or any other questions you have.

If they cannot help you themselves, they can refer you to a GP or other health professional.

Treatment from a pharmacist

Pharmacists can suggest treatments that do not need a prescription for a range of conditions.

Most pharmacies can also offer prescription medicine for some conditions, without you needing to see a GP or make an appointment. This is called Pharmacy First.

Conditions they can offer prescription medicine for are:

  • impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
  • sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
  • sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women aged 16 to 64 years)
  • shingles (aged 18 years and over)

If you are not within these age ranges, a pharmacist can still offer advice and support decisions about self care treatment with over the counter medicines, but you may need to see a GP for treatment.

If you go to a pharmacy with one of these conditions, the pharmacist will offer you advice, treatment or refer you to a GP or other health professional if needed. They will also update your GP health record, but your information will not be shared with anyone else.

Most pharmacies near you can provide prescription medicine for these conditions but contact them before visiting to check.
